Sammy Monsour and Kassady Wiggins, an award-winning Charleston-based chef/mixologist duo, are thrilled to announce the launch of their debut cookbook Salt & Shore (Weldon Owen International; $40.00; hardcover), available in bookstores and online nationwide today. Celebrating coastal dishes from the Southeast and highlighting the husband-and-wife pair’s commitment to sustainability, Salt & Shore offers readers more than 120 recipes that encourage seasonal cooking true to coastal communities they call home.
Born and raised in Chapel Hill, NC, Sammy Monsour is a third-generation chef and published cookbook author. Currently serving as the chef lead for the Environmental Defense Fund and a board member of the James Beard Foundation smart catch impact program, Sammy’s inspiration stems from his childhood in the American South. His co-author, as well as life and work partner, Kassady Wiggins, also hails from the Carolinas, growing up in Greenville, SC. Introduced to farming and sustainability at an early age, her African American ancestry and passion for Southern culture are the foundation for her interpretation of modern craft cocktails. In 2023, the couple opened the doors to their restaurant Joyce, a modern coastal restaurant serving reimagined Southern Cuisine in downtown Los Angeles to much acclaim.
Honoring the local foodways and cultures from their childhood home states Salt & Shore explores the diversity within Southern cuisine through the lens of sustainability— beginning with a chapter dedicated to playful coastal cocktails and non-alcoholic beverages like the Blue Bayou, Captain Creole, and Carolina Cherry Crush and complemented by approachable dishes such as the Key West Pink Shrimp Aguachile, Catfish & Country Ham Croquetas, Louisiana Crawfish Roll, and Smoked Oyster & Butternut Squash Chowder.
Lifelong advocates for sustainable eating and ocean advocacy, Sammy and Kassady’s enthusiasm for thoughtful food, craft cocktails, and revitalizing community, shines through every page of Salt & Shore.
